While this is a beer that we have wanted to try for a long time, it has taken more than two years for us to see that desire through to fruition. We felt the time was finally right to make a Belgian-style Double IPA to showcase the best of our two most beloved ingredients: yeast and hops.
We decided to keep the malt character relatively subdued and instead let the fruity character of the yeast intermingle with the citrusy and piney character of the hops. While this theme is common to many of our beers brewed with our house yeast, this time there is no subtlety in the presence of either! The yeast character is strong with flavours and aromas of citrus and spice. Chinook, Columbus, and Simcoe hops take these flavour aspects and intensify the aroma immensely. The result is a flavour roller coaster that excites the pallet and the nose through the entire glass. While it may not be our most refined or subtle brew, we think you will agree that it sure is one of our most fun to date!
Naming: It is somewhat of a coincidence but this beer shares the name of a famous plumber. It also happens to share its style with our year-round beer, Ichii Senshin, while happening to also be stronger in alcohol as well as using more hops. In short, we see this beer as being a kind of big brother to Ichii Senshin, with the name coming from “Marihana” (a less commonly used but more descriptive word for hops; “mari” literally meaning “cone” and “hana” meaning "flower”) and “O”, a reading of “otoko” or “man”. Without wanting to sound too cocky, this is a beer that we feel can match up to another very popular older brother.
