[Naming]
When reading beer descriptions of beers that feature hops from either America or New Zealand, you’ll inevitably stumble across the word ‘dank’. What the heck does that mean?
Some people would attribute words like “resinous, earthy and pungent”; this unique profile is likened to the smell of cannabis and is a desirable character in hop forward beer styles like IPAs. Dankness can add depth to fruity and bitter characteristics to create a complex, multifaceted flavour profile.
So... what does it actually taste like??
To answer that question head-on, we present a two-part Dank IPA series: “Nanja” and “Monja”.

This beer stems from our love of fresh, resinous, Southern California IPAs. While the definition of what a “West Coast IPA" is has shifted a bit over the years, one thing that has stayed constant is how these southern California breweries managed to get the most dank character into their beers. If you’re not familiar with the term "Dank", it can perhaps best be described as a pine and tress sap resinous character, and this is often accompanied by tropical notes of overripened fruit. This is the first in a series of 2 beers, where we had one simple goal: to make it as dank as possible. This 1st beer focuses on achieving this by using modern hop growing and processing techniques from the growers down in New Zealand, paired with a classically dank American hop. The base beer is simple, just golden promise with a little bit of wheat for body, and some sugar to boost the ABV while keeping the final gravity low in order to preserve a crisp dry finish. After that, we rounded up some of the dankest hops available to us. Citra, the classic American citrus-forward hop, and a staple in just about any dank IPA, was paired with Eggers' Riwaka Diesel. Grown at Eggers Farms, a hop grower known for making some of the best Riwaka available, are able to gain a distinct tropical dank character thanks to the unique terroir of the farm. This time around we used a special version of their Riwaka called “Riwaka Diesel”, which has been left even longer on the vine to gain an intense tropical and overripe fruit character, mixed with some of the sweet fusel alcohol character, giving it a pungent aroma. We additionally used Nelson Bliss, created when Nelson hops undergo a conditioning process allowing the start of early stages of decay, helping to concentrate and bring out its most intense character. Finally, we added some concentrated Cryo hops of both Riwaka and Citra to really bring the hop flavour over the top. Our goal was to create the most resinous NZ hopped IPA we have ever had.
