The Kamo River is an unmistakable streak down the Kyoto landscape. Pulling its water from the mountains to the north of the city, its two branches converge at Demachiyanagi before flowing through the bustling downtown and onward to join the Katsura River to flow out into the Osaka Bay. For locals and visitors alike, the Kamo can serve many purposes. At times It can be a place to exercise or bird watch, play a game of bocce ball, have a picnic, or take a date. For many, though, it is a place to simply relax, collect one's thoughts, and enjoy the moment.

Much the same can be said about Kamogawa Cafe, a small cafe near the banks of the river run by the endearing Dai-chan. While many cafes roast their own beans, Dai-chan does so in a slightly different style. He forgoes the use of complicated roasting machines with fine tuned timers and dials in favour of a hand cranked stove-top roaster that fits a mere 1000g of beans at a time.

The roasting is the near definition of "handmade," and he spent years perfecting it. One look at his shelf of notebooks filled with the results of countless tests, changing the roasting time by mere seconds or the strength of the flame by the narrowest margins, shows his dedication to his craft. A serendipitous common friend introduced us to Dai-chan many months ago, but it is only now that our desire to create a coffee beer together with him has come to fruition.

While 'Kamogawa no Hotoride' (or 'By the Kamo River') is, of course, a coffee beer, it may be better to think of it as a beer coffee. We were so impressed with the KBC Blend he created for our collaboration that we decided to put the focus of the beer mainly on his coffee. The aroma, flavour, and even look of the beer nearly mirror the beans, and we deliberately chose to under-carbonate the beer to keep the mouthfeel as close to coffee as possible. We hope you enjoy a moment of solitude at Kamogawa, whether it be the river or with one of Dai-chan's coffees.
