Weizen inspired by matcha Pocky candy.

[Character]
Green Tea Pocky Inspired Oat Cream Ale. An almost chewable oat cream ale brewed with a heaping amount of green tea and a mix of sweet tropical and spicy herbal hops designed to mimic the delicious green tea candy treat.
[Food Pairing]
Granola with oats or malt, milk chocolate
[Naming]
As part of a double collaboration with Zakkoku Kobo, we decided to make two very different weizens, one being a lovely orthodox representation of this wonderful classic German style, and the other his heretic cousin, one that will have many of the creators of this old style rolling in their graves!
[Brewer's Voice]
With our first beer of the collaboration being focused on brewing a traditional style well, for the second beer we wanted to go the other direction. Sometimes it is fun to throw caution to the wind and just have fun, and this is what this beer is all about. Using a similar malt profile to our first beer and a blend of the same yeast, that is where the similarities stop. We had a concept of using matcha in the beer but wanted to just have fun with this beer and really take it over the top. Inspired by the matcha Pocky candy (they are delicious) we crafted this beer around those flavors. We used a blend of wheat and oats to mimic the cracker lick character. The hops are a blend of German and American hops to accentuate the herbal character of the Matcha while also contributing a small amount of tropical notes to mimic the sweet aroma of the candy. A small amount of lactose gives the beer a bit of creamy mouthfeel and sweetness. And lastly, we brewed this beer with a heaping amount of matcha. This was added both as a tea and steeped on the brewhouse and again added more downstream in the bright tank. This beer truly embodies the name “heresy” as we strayed very far from classing brewing practices in the making of this beer, but we did so in the pursuit of having fun and producing something quite unique. There is no shortage of matcha in this beer, so please swirl gently and enjoy!
