Each season we look forward to releasing a new Saison through our Shunkashuto (Four Seasons) series. While the recipe changes each season, just like with our Kimagure Series, one difference with the Shunkashuto Series is that we try to use the same four themes each year. For spring 2019, the spotlight has been placed on a more classic interpretation of the style than the more modern themes like sour and hoppy that debut in other seasons.
For this year’s Spring recipe, we looked to put the focus on malts we don’t typically include in our Saisons, particularly Vienna and Munich malt. These malts are toasted for a longer time than base Pilsner malt, so they have a deeper flavour and provide a sense of sweetness in the final product. We kept the hops classic, using a blend of Styrian Goldings (Bobek) and Czech Saaz, as well as the yeast. The result is a full flavour yet easy drinking Saison with a classic yeast character and a touch of sweetness in the finish ...a perfect beer for Spring!
