A hazy IPA, showcasing Kohia Nelson, bursting with sweet tropical aromas
[Character]Light crisp hazy IPA with sweet tropical notes of passion fruit, orange, and guava.[Food Pairing]Marinated leeks and white fish, pork shoulder white stew, blue cheese with walnuts, honey bruscetta[Naming]If IPAs were considered to be a show, there's no denying that the star of it is the hops. Normally it's more like a blend - a band, if you will - of multiple hops performing together. For this series, however, it's a solo artist - a "Hop Idol", if you will, showcasing their individual talents on the big stage. Who would you vote for?[Brewer's Voice]Our new "Hop Idol" series is where we pick one hop to be the star of the show in a hop-forward IPA. Our first hop to take center stage is 2024 Kohia Nelson. This hop is an interesting one as it is actually a blended hop pellet containing Nelson Sauvin, Rakau and New Zealand Passion fruit that has been dried and added to the hops before pelletising. The resulting hop pellet is known for giving a blend of guava, orange and (obviously) passion fruit flavors.
To shine a light on Kohia Nelson, we brewed an IPA that blends a bit of West Coast and East Coast influence in terms of style, with the hops themselves being from New Zealand. The base beer is comprised of Golden Promise malts with some flaked and malted wheat, and just a splash of Vienna malt, for a depth of mild sweetness and body. This beer was fermented with Thiol Libre, a yeast strain designed to take advantage of bound thiols in hops and unlock tropical aromas. This base beer, with just that touch of sweetness, and the low bitterness, is designed to really let this hybrid New Zealand hop express its best fruity and tropical personality.
