A fresh craft beer twist on the classic light lager style.
[Character]The North Star Pilsner used for this beer gives a wonderful, sweet bread characteristic, with the addition of flaked rice it cuts the protein level to give the beer a crisp dry finish. The hop character is quite global utilizing Polish, German, and New Zealand hops. This unique combination comes together to give this beer a mixture of Floral, fruity, and slightly tropical flavors, with a light green tea undertone.[Food Pairing]"Kakiage" (mixed fry), herbed pork katsu, broccoli sauteed with anchovy[Naming]Our original release of New Frontier was a journey into new territory: lager. From there we now look to branch out into yet more untraveled paths, changing hops, malt, and yeast as we continue the journey to find the perfect lager.[Brewer's Voice]With hot weather, rice lagers just hit the spot, they are crisp, refreshing, and are incredibly crushable. However, when it starts to cool down, I want just a bit more character and flavor out of my beer than most commercial forms of this beer can offer. For our rice lager, we wanted to achieve that same drinkability but with a bit more flavor and character to be drank year-round. After sampling over 20 different base malts, we decided on NorthStar pilsner which stood above the rest. It has a wonderful crisp malt character with a mild sweet bread like flavor. We used flaked rice which cuts the protein level down allowing the beer to get the crisp dry character you expect. For hops we went with a quite unique blend here. bittered with a traditional German hop to give the beer some light bitterness and a depth of flavor with a nice herbal citrus backbone. We then did a combination of polish and New Zealand hops for the Whirlpool. These hops added a medley of floral and stone fruit character that really makes this beer uniquely interesting and flavorful. This will be a go-to beer for me for a while, so it’s time to make space in the fridge!
